In winter, the surface of a Minnesota ponds or stream will freeze, crack, get covered with snow, melt, and freeze again, forming crazy designs of endless variety. As spring approaches, the ice on a stream is attacked by fast flowing meltwater and things get really interesting. The best time for photographs it after a sudden cold snap that followed a warming trend; the snow is gone and new ice just formed. But that ice can be thin so watch where you're standing.
